…Paul is terrified by the Ebola crisis, but his Randian solution of having people cure themselves through hard work and ingenuity should do the trick. And more than 3,000 people — over ten percent of the…

Former Oracle CEO and descendant of Poseidon the Greek god of the sea Larry Ellison will host a $1,500-per-person National Republican Senatorial Committee fund-raiser in his sweeping California mansion. The event will feature Rand Paul, the first-ever Ayn Rand fever dream to serve as senator.

I tend to agree with Howard Roark in Ayn Rand’s The Fountainhead when he says, “What can be done with one substance must never be done with another. No two materials are alike.”

A charismatic ideologue with a trimmed salt-and-pepper beard, Jon Caldara runs the Denver-based Independence Institute, an unabashed free-market think-tank that purports to be “Freedom’s front line” and hosts an annual Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Party, which is exactly what it sounds like.

The shelves in Caldara’s stately corner office display an Ann Coulter action figure (still in the box) and a sheet of postage stamps featuring the face of libertarian inspiration Ayn Rand.

2011 was also the year when Paul Ryan warned Ben Bernanke that he was “debasing” the dollar, arguing that rising commodity prices were the harbinger of runaway inflation; the Bank for International Settlements made a similar argument, albeit with less Ayn Rand. They were completely wrong, but Ryan is still the intellectual leader of the GOP and the BIS is still treated as a fount of wisdom.

Don’t believe me? Read the book. Well, actually, don’t read the book. It’s awful, and it has worse sex scenes than an Ayn Rand novel, which I honestly did not think was possible. It also contains a full chapter, and I am not kidding, devoted to Ms. Dunham’s weight-loss…

Towards the end of our talk we come back to the importance of kindness. “It’s massively underrated,” he says. “And the good things that happen in the world only happen because of it. There are the invisible volunteers; and if you have a foot in the special-needs world, my God, the people you meet.

“This is how the world keeps spinning. It’s not Ayn Rand’s Atlas, it’s not the oligarchs, it’s the utterly obscure, kind people. That’s how we all get through the night.”

Sympathizers consider Ryan an intellectual (don’t conservatives hate the breed?). But his shopworn orthodoxy was discredited before 1900. It’s simple-minded, laissez-faire social Darwinism, second-hand from the atheist cult novelist Ayn Rand: privatize everything, everyone for himself, vouchers for the well-off. Ryan imbibes this intellectual moonshine like it’s biblical.

All that’s beneficial, fair and uncorrupted in America’s framework was put there by liberals and Democrats…

The impulse to list great conservative or libertarian films is maddeningly thwarted; before being aborted, or crashing on the rocks of movies made from Ayn Rand novels, such efforts often turn up the Will Smith vehicle The Pursuit of Happyness…

On his show this week, John Oliver wanted to know how Ayn Rand is still a thing. He used a clip of Paul Ryan praising Rand, but on HuffPost Live, Ryan said he never actually agreed with Rand’s philosophy itself.

In the Last Week Tonight bit, the voiceover points out that Rand was both pro-choice and anti-religion.
