The major focus of the conference, however, is economics. Here’s where the optimism exists. Steve Moore showed how the Reagan recovery outperformed the Obama recovery 24.5% to 11.2%. Prosperity, he and others pointed out, is entirely possible. All that is required is to cut government meddling and spending. The contest, as one speaker pointed out, is not really between conservatives and liberals, it is between the producers and the statists.

If that sounds like Ayn Rand, it is. It was fitting, then, that on Wednesday there was a preview of third installment in the Atlas Shrugged series. There was no question at this conference that collectivism is the enemy and that is an immoral system.

The instigator of the idea is John Aglialoro, a successful businessman who has long been a major funder of free-market causes (he was the financier behind the Atlas Shrugged movie trilogy).

The Anthem Film Festival last night screened part three of the Atlas Shrugged movie series, subtitled “Who is John Galt?” The film festival is part of Freedomfest 2014, going on this week in Las Vegas. The conference theme is “Is Big Brother here?”

Present for the preview was Kristopher Polaha, the actor who portrayed John Galt in the movie, as well as producer Harmon Kaslow, executive producer John Aglialoro, and advisor David Kelley from the Atlas Foundation. John Stossel moderated a Q&A session following the showing.

I believe the Atlas Shrugged movie is the most important film ever made. I should follow: AS Monaco. They play in the top French league, but since they’re based in the tiny, absurdist tax haven of Monaco—and because they’re owned by a Russian oligarch wealthy enough to afford his recent $4.5 billion divorce settlement—they can afford to buy pretty much whomever they want. As such, they win despite playing on top of a parking garage and drawing like 300 fans to home matches. So you’ll have no trouble finding a place to sit, you soulless bastard.

September, the producers of Atlas Shrugged Part III: Who Is John Galt? launched a Kickstarter campaign that ended up raising $446,000 to help fund the final installment of the film adaptation of Ayn Rand’s 1957 novel about a world driven to the brink of collapse by
overweening redistributionist government. The predictable response was cheap jokes from people whose (mis)understanding of Rand only went as far as: “She’s that scary chick who valorizes businessmen and the market.” Detractors assumed that asking people to freely
support something they valued was altruistic and therefore un-Randian.

Falling outside the top ten was America, the jingoistic title from Dinesh D'Souza. It is behaving much more like an Atlas Shrugged release than a de facto sequel to 2016: Obama’s America.
