According to the Ayn Rand Institute’s Don Watkins and Yaron Brook, (ari.aynrand.org ) authors of the upcoming book, “Equal Is Unfair: America’s Misguided Fight Against Income Inequality,” what’s stifling opportunity in America is not income inequality, but political equality. Instead of the government protecting our equal rights, it is granting some people special privileges and shackling others with special burdens.

Kathryn Rubino, Above the Law

An amused tipster drew our attention to a debate that UNC Law School is hosting next week: “Inequality: Fair or Unfair?”

You guys, am I missing something? It seems, definitionally, there is only one right answer.

Of course there are actually two poor souls that actually have to go through the motions for this debate:

“The debate will feature our own Professor William Marshall and Dr. Yaron Brook, Executive Director of the Ayn Rand Institute.”

Should have known, obviously the Objectivist will be arguing inequality is fair. Of course Brook also says global warming is “another in a line of failed scare stories,” so maybe take what he says with a grain of salt.

Yaron Brook, who heads the Ayn Rand Institute, is my foil in the Dream debate.

Brook takes the premise of government as the source of all evils to an instructive extreme. Thus the financial collapse of 2008, weirdly, was not the result of Wall Street financial engineering but of government regulation (don’t ask).

“How do we take a country that’s so collectivistic in its core and … how do you turn it into an individualistic country that respects its Jewishness but at the end of the day the individual is sacred and the individual is the supreme value?” asked Yaron Brook, president and executive director of the Ayn Rand Institute who traveled from the U.S. to Israel for the conference that was organized jointly by the Israeli Freedom Movement and Israel’s Ayn Rand Center.

Many of those who came said they look to the U.S. for inspiration and hope they can be of support to their ideological allies across the ocean…
